The type of liposuction we use in an abdominal liposuction is called tumescent suction assisted fine cannula lipo or more simply Suction assisted Liposuction (SAL). This is the standard method of liposuction and typically yields the best and safest results. In this procedure, a small cannula is inserted through a small incision and is then attached to a vacuum device. The surgeon will then push and pull the cannula in a forwards and backwards motion, carefully through the fat layer which breaks up fat cells and then draws them out of the body by suction. Additionally, the tumescent technique means that general anesthetic is not needed and local anesthetic is used instead as well as the procedure minimizing blood loss during the procedure. Abdominal liposuction typically takes the longest of all liposuction procedures at about 3 hours long.

Recovery and care guidelines
Every person’s recovery from an abdominal liposuction is different and recovery time depends on numerous factors such as how you care for yourself after the surgery, your health status, the success of the procedure, the type of procedure as well as numerous other factors. To assist you in your recovery, below you will find information about recovery and care guidelines after your procedure.
As you recover from your abdominal liposuction, a compression garment or elastic bandages may cover treatment areas, once your procedure is completed. This is done to help control swelling and to compress the skin to your new body contours. In addition to this, small temporary drains are sometimes placed in existing incisions beneath the skin in order to remove excess blood or fluid.
After this, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for yourself after the procedure that may include:
- When to follow up with your cosmetic surgeon
- Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and to reduce the potential for infection
- Specific concerns and issues to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
On top of this, make sure that you ask your cosmetic surgeon questions about what you can expect during your recovery period. Questions may include:
- What medication will I be given or prescribed after the procedure?
- Where will I be taken after my procedure is complete?
- Will I have dressings/bandages after the procedure?
- Are stitches removed? When?
- When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
- When do I return for follow-up care?
The swelling may take several months to fully dissipate. While it does this, your contours and your enhanced self-image should continue to develop. It is recommended that you take between one and two weeks off before returning to normal activity depending on the patient. You can then return to exercising after about 6-8 weeks.
