Knee liposuction is the removal of fatty deposits around the knee is defined by the bone and not the fat. Knee liposuction is typically done alongside inner and outer thigh liposuction for a well-balanced procedure. Together, these two forms of liposuction lead to legs that are slimmer and straighter.
The Benefits of Knee Liposuction
There are numerous benefits associated with knee liposuction and these benefits are increased if you undergo thigh liposuction as well. The main benefits of knee liposuction are
- Slimmer and straight leg contour
- Positive toning effect on both upper and lower legs
- More comfort when walking or running
- Tighter skin around the knee area
- Barely visibly scarring
There are other benefits that you will experience in your day-to-day life after undergoing knee liposuction, but these are the main benefits that become the most apparent after undergoing knee liposuction.
Who is a Candidate for Knee Liposuction?
Candidates for knee liposuction are those who have significant fullness in the knee area due to fatty collections. This fat may be on the inside of the knee which is the most common, below the knee or over the top of the knee itself. Additionally, if you are looking for slimmer and straighter legs, knee liposuction along with thigh liposuction is very effective in allowing this improvement to your body. SO when considering knee liposuction, consider undergoing thigh liposuction as well.
The type of knee liposuction we use is called tumescent suction assisted fine cannula lipo or more simply Suction assisted Liposuction (SAL). This is the standard method of liposuction and typically yields the best and safest results. In this procedure, a small cannula is inserted through a small incision and this is then attached to a vacuum device. The surgeon will then push and pull the cannula in a forwards and backwards motion, carefully through the fat layer which breaks up fat cells and then draws them out of the body by suction. Additionally, the tumescent technique means that general anesthetic is not needed and local anesthetic is used instead as well as the procedure minimizing blood loss during the procedure. This results in a much slimmer and straighter knee that fits your body better. The procedure typically takes between 1 and 1 ½ hours, but it can be longer if it is done with other procedures such as thigh liposuction.

Recovery and care guidelines
Every person’s recovery from knee liposuction is different and recovery time depends on numerous factors such as how you care for yourself after the surgery, your health status, the success of the procedure, the type of procedure as well as numerous other factors. To assist you in your recovery, below you will find information about recovery and care guidelines after your procedure.
As you recover from your knee liposuction procedure, a knee compression garment covers the treatment area, once your procedure is completed. This is worn for about 10 days. This is done to help control swelling and to compress the skin to your new body contours.
After this, you will be given specific instructions on how to care for yourself after the procedure that may include:
- When to follow up with your cosmetic surgeon
- Medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and to reduce the potential for infection
- Specific concerns and issues to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
On top of this, make sure that you ask your cosmetic surgeon questions about what you can expect during your recovery period. Questions may include:
- What medication will I be given or prescribed after the procedure?
- Where will I be taken after my procedure is complete?
- Will I have dressings/bandages after the procedure?
- Are stitches removed? When?
- When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
- When do I return for follow-up care?
The swelling may take several months to fully dissipate. While it does this, your contours and your enhanced self-image should continue to develop. However, you can typically return to your normal activities after 2 days and return to exercise after about 3-4 weeks. This is different for each patient, so ask your surgeon how long it will take before you can return to your normal activities after your procedure.
